Does Size Matter? 5 Things to Think About When Choosing Your First Home

Different Size Houses In Row On Wooden Table

When it comes to houses, size does matter – although perhaps not in the way you understand. While you shouldn’t purchase a house that is too small for your family and your needs, bigger does not always mean better. That is why it is important that you carefully consider these things before you buy your first home:

Your Budget
One of the first things you should do when you decide to buy a house is to get pre-approved. After all, you may not really know what you can afford until the bank tells you how much you can swing! Also, think about the future. You may not have kids now or you only have one, but if you’re thinking about having a big family in the near future, then you should remember that your finances will be completely different when that time comes. It may be wise to buy less than what you can afford, just so you have more than enough breathing room budget-wise.

Your Need for Extra Rooms
So you may not be thinking of having more children in the future. But kids are not the only ones needing their own space. Do you plan to work from home? Or are you into crafts and other hobbies? If so, it might be a good idea to buy a house with an extra bedroom so you’ll have space for the things you love to do!

Your “Real” Life
Of course, we all want that house with a gym and that amazing kitchen fit for a cooking show. But let’s be realistic. Do you really need them? If you rarely work out, or if you usually order take-outs after work, then perhaps those “glam” features are not necessary. Conversely, if you have more clothes than that shop in the corner, then buying a house with very little closet space would not make sense at all.

Your Ability and Willingness to Handle Maintenance
The bigger the house, the more demanding the upkeep. If you and your family will handle the maintenance of the house – from regular vacuuming to gardening and more, make sure that you are all up for the responsibility. Too many big homes have decreased in value because their owners were not able to maintain their condition.

Finding a house in just the perfect size for you is as important as finding the right location. If you nail it, you would be able to get the most out of your new house, but if you impulsively buy a house and find that it’s too big or too small for you, it can really be a problem soon.
